It's the season...

Jaime does joy school every now and then. And last week she made gingerbread cookies with the kiddos. There was a little leftover dough, and as you've seen from previous posts, I'm pretty handy in the kitchen. So, Tess and I decided to make gingerbread monsters:

Pre-baking

Post-baking masterpieces (I'm a little annoyed they turned into cute little chubby monsters)...Except for the snake which ended up looking like something that would be worse finding baked in the oven than a snake:

I hope you've learned your lesson. Gingerbread dough is intrinsically cute. No matter how evil, vile, or angular you make your cookie subjects, they will always come out looking like a round, happy Pillsbury Doughboy. :S

I find myself with a free moment. It seems a troupe of young men has conned me into turning over my xbox. Now that my nap is over I have nothing to do (that is nothing I want to do).

Therefore, I'd like to turn this comment toward xbox. I realize you don't know what skyrim is and I know that I did not do much to explain it. Suffice it to say that knowledge you lack is now relevant, if I am to continue. Of course I will, if I had my xbox I'd just play skyrim, but I don't so I must tell you about it.

Skyrim is the newest part, perhaps you could call it a continent or definitely a geographical region, of an imaginary world. Skyrim is the Elder scrolls V, so there are in fact 4 other similar regions to have been previously released. I only dabbled with life in Morrowwind and Oblivion, two of the previous regions. In this imaginary world there are many skills to learn. Indeed everyone is born with some innate skill, but through using the skill one may acquire greater ability to do so again in the future. I believe there are 17 skills, from memory, and they include: 5 kinds of magic, using a shield, one handed weapons, two-handed weapons, archery, moving quietly, alchemy, smithing, enchanting, light armor, heavy armor, pickpocketing and lockpicking. Depending on the race, of course the many geographical regions have different native races, you choose some skills start around 15 and some at 20. Skyrim is the home of the nords, which I've been told are a Viking-esque race. Although there is some racism evident in the story, I don't think any of that ever impacts the player. In-fact a cat like race, the Khajit, have a travelling merchant caravan that camps outside of city walls because they are not welcome in the city. Although when playing as a khajit one is not subjected to the same harsh treatment, afaik.

Getting back to the point, skills can be raised up to 100. Personally, I would like to get all skills to 100 because at that point one also reaches the max level. It starts at one and only takes a few skill increases to level up. I suspect the max is 81 mostly because I had an xbox acquaintance at that level, but a friend says it's 70 or 75 (I don't remember) and that person must have used an exploit to cheat.
To say leveling up is the only thing to do in skyrim would be incorrect. There is plenty to keep one busy. Just like the area is an imaginary world, the char lives an imaginary life. Doing work is often rewarded immediately in gold or some other treasure. Quests are errands one runs to progress the story and receive rewards.

My hope is that by now you have some idea of the scope of this world. It's not small. I have never done it, but if one were to circum-navigate the map, I'd wager this would take an entire (real life) day and likely a lot of discipline to not get distracted by a cave, tomb, or Dwemer ruins. Which by the way can sometimes be fairly large. There is an underground region known as Blackreach it is fairly extensive also. I was there for a few hours, but only found a few of this special plant that can be collected there. Granted it is a dark and scary place and I was still quite low in level when I was there.

So in this vast imaginary world what did I find? Well this morning I found a cave that I had never visited before, the game tells you when you discover a new place and even marks your map and differentiates between places you've heard about and places you've visited. So in this cave, which was more like a passage through some rock into a natural clearing in the rock. I find a few wild beasts bears and wolves and some magical tree creatures and a couple hawks. I dispatched the beasts with ease and killed the hawks for their beaks and feathers, to be used in alchemy. Then I begin a methodical search of the foliage, also for alchemical purposes.

In the midst of this activity I am confronted by a quaint image. It appears to be a cave etching, but with what medium is uncertain. It was very distinctive from the rest of the cave walls in-fact this appeared to be the only etchings in the cave. Two images, each about the size of a hand. I recognized them immediately, but still I cannot understand how you did it. Unmistakably it was two of your pre-baked creatures.

FYI, comments are limitet to approx. 5000 chars. On a brighter note it took so long to type this on my blackberry, I got my xbox back about 10 minutes ago.
